The course will be run from our Cottage and docks on Sproat Lake., Vancouver Island, only a 15 minute rive from Port Alberni. There is easy parking and shower and changing facilities.
We supply all required learning materials and equipment. including PFD's for the SKS course. Good waterproof footwear and a windbreaker is recommended. Prepare to get wet! We do have a variety of wetsuits sizes if you would like to have some extra warmth.
The course will follow the Sail Canada Standard. Sessions will primarily be in boat and on water. Candidates will be evaluated on their ability to follow instructions as crew while assisting in vessel operation and on their understanding of the terminology and concepts that are part of the Standard. Candidates will be asked to complete a workbook as an open book learning exercise before the end of the sessions. Candidates must achieve at least 70% on the workbook.
Cost per person for the three afternoon sailing sessions is $400. This includes taxes and the supply of a Resource Book "Sail Canada Basic Cruising Skills" by Gillian West. Also included is the Sail Canada Logbook which is the document that records students courses and progression through Sail Canada courses.
These sail training sessions will require short periods of moderate upper and lower body exertion. Participants will have the opportunity to experience sun, wind and spray. When underway the sailboat may exhibit irregular motion due to wind and waves. Participants will be expected to learn and demonstrate skills and perform tasks while the sailboat is at the dock, and underway in an afternoon sailing format. These sessions are suitable for most fitness levels and will provide a good body core workout.
